In 2020, JGU was recognized as an Institution of Eminence by the Indian Ministry of Education. The institution was built as a philanthropic initiative of its Founding Chancellor, Mr. Naveen Jindal, in memory of his father, Mr. O.P. Jindal. The institution aspires to serve as a model for institutional excellence in higher education and has made significant progress towards achieving the goal through its nine schools; three research, capacity building, and training institutes; and multiple research initiatives and centers.
JGU is a research-intensive university deeply committed to its core institutional values of interdisciplinarity and innovative pedagogy; pluralism and rigorous scholarship; and globalism and international engagement. Research
JGU has more than 60 interdisciplinary research centers and three research and capacity building institutes: the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS), the International Institute for Higher Education Research & Capacity Building (IIHed), and the Leadership Development and Executive Education (JILDEE).
Its faculty members can be credited for more than 5,000 publications, and their output has grown annually by 45% on average between 2010 and 2021.
JGU has received US$3.25 million in external research funding since 2009, with prospects to secure up to $5 million in the coming 5 years by 2025-26. The university earmarks 20% of its annual research budget to support student research projects and activities that include annual student research colloquiums.

海角大神 has a primary agreement with JGU and several subagreements that establish a student exchange and a cooperative LL.M. program with 海角大神's Maurer School of Law, and a visiting student program with the Kelley School of Business.
